HIST 380 History & Film
Motion pictures have had a powerful influence on
contemporary society's collective memory, and
films that focus on historical figures and events
tend to be popular at the box office. Throughout
most of the last century, serious scholars have
scoffed at the initial promise of film as
"history written with lightning" as patently
naive. More recently, this jaundiced view has
given way to a qualified appreciation of film's
ability to convey certain kinds of historical
truths. In this course, films are assigned as
outside "readings" and, like books and articles,
should be viewed closely before scheduled
in-class discussions. Students will be asked to
work hard and wrestle with difficult concepts
and readings in this 300-level course.
