2023-2024 Catalog and Student Handbook

Admission Requirements

Admission is selective and competitive, although each application receives individual consideration. Applicants must seek to satisfy the following criteria:

  1. Completion of a high-school diploma
  2. Have completed 16 academic units of secondary school work in a College Preparatory Program, including
    1. 4 units of English
    2. 2 units of foreign language
    3. 3 units of college preparatory mathematics
    4. 2 units of laboratory science
    5. 1 unit of social science
    6. and other units approved by an accredited secondary school.

The College may make exceptions for applicants who show strong academic promise but who may not meet all of the academic units. Students living in states that require proficiency examinations for graduation must present evidence of passing such examinations.

Verification of High School Completion

Marietta College requires every admitted student to provide a final, official high school transcript or recognized equivalent, or proof of homeschooling at the secondary level as defined by state law, to the undergraduate admissions office no later than the midpoint of the first semester of enrollment.

If either Marietta or the US Department of Education suspects that a student’s high school diploma is not valid or was not obtained from an entity that provides secondary school education, Marietta will take the following steps to evaluate the validity of the student’s high school completion.

1. Request documentation from the high school to confirm the validity of the student’s diploma;
2. Confirm with the relevant department or agency in the state in which the secondary school is located that the secondary school is recognized as a provider of secondary school education.

As noted in the Federal Financial Aid Handbook, the above two-part verification satisfies the high school validity requirement. Other approaches may also be used, if they serve to validate the student’s high school completion. Students who indicate on their FAFSA® that they graduated high school must give the name, city, and state of the high school.
