2023-2024 Catalog and Student Handbook

HIST 302 Professional Historian

This course is designed for history majors, minors, public history minors, and for education majors concentrating in the field of history. It explores the diverse ways that historians practice, investigate, and interpret history. Students will learn how to write and research using both primary and secondary sources. Coursework will include workbook exercises, book reviews, and preparing historical episodes. This preparation will culminate in a student-designed historiographical project. Students will also deal with the ethical dimensions of the study of the past and standards of conduct for a professional historian. This course will help you to answer the question: "what can I do with a history degree?" either in traditional historical professions (teaching, researching, public history) or in many other professions that require critical thinking, writing, and investigating the past.
