Grants and scholarships
Government Programs
The Federal Pell Grant is foundation of all federal financial aid for undergraduate students, and is combined with other aid resources to meet financial need. The Pell Grant was created to assist lower income families.
The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) is a need-based grant program developed to assist low income families and can only be awarded to students with exceptional financial need. Grants consist of a combination of federal and College funds. Due to limited funding, Marietta College restricts FSEOG to students living on campus.
The Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant program provides grants of up to $4,000 per year to students who intend to teach in a high need subject area in a public or private elementary or secondary school that serves students from low-income families. This grant reverts to an Unsubsidized Stafford loan if the student does not complete the teaching requirement within 8 years of graduation/program completion.
The Ohio College Opportunity Grant (OCOG) is a state program providing grants to eligible Ohio residents enrolled as undergraduate students. To be eligible, the student must be a Pell grant recipient with exceptional need.
The PA State Grant is a need-based grant that provides funding to eligible undergraduate students from Pennsylvania. Students must be enrolled at least half-time with 50% of their credits earned through in-classroom instruction. Recipients must also meet Satisfactory Academic Progress as determined by the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA).
The Ohio Governor’s Merit Scholarship (OGMS) is a merit-based scholarship funded by the Ohio Department of Higher Education. It is given to students who are determined to be in the top 5% of their public or chartered nonpublic high school graduating class, as well as the top 5% of homeschooled students and dropout prevention recovery school students. Students receiving this scholarship are eligible to receive it for up to four academic years as long as they maintain a Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above and complete at least 20 credit hours per academic year.
The Choose Ohio First Scholarship (COF) is an Ohio Department of Higher Education-funded, merit-based scholarship for Ohio-based students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) majors. Students must apply for this scholarship by June 1st prior to the award year they are to first receive the scholarship, and must meet both the state and institutional requirements of the scholarship in order to receive and maintain scholarship eligibility. Students must have earned at least a 3.0 Cumulative GPA and must be new to the STEM program they are enrolling in to receive this scholarship. Eligible Marietta College majors for undergraduate students include Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Information Systems, Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Geology, Health Science, Mathematics, Neuroscience, Petroleum Engineering, Physics, and Psychology. Graduate students in the Physician Assistant Program are also eligible.
The Ohio War Orphan and Severely Disabled Veterans’ Children Scholarship (WOS) program provides undergraduate tuition assistance to the children of deceased or severely disabled Ohio
veterans, who served in the armed forces during a period of declared war or conflict. WOS Ohio Revised Code can be found at: http://codes.ohio.gov/orc/5910.
The GEAR UP Grant program is designed to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education. GEAR UP provides six-year or seven years grants to states and partnerships to provide services at high-poverty middle and high schools. GEAR UP grantees serve an entire cohort of students beginning no later than the seventh grade and follow the cohort through high school. GEAR UP funds are also used to provide college scholarships to low-income students.
The Ohio National Guard Scholarship Program (ONGSP) is available to current members of the Ohio Army & Air National Guard, as well as former members with qualifying deployment time (Latta Amendment students). The scholarship covers 100% of tuition charges for courses applicable to, or leading to, an associate or bachelor’s degree, a diploma-granting nursing program, as well as approved trade certification, credential-certifying, or licensing programs at participating public colleges and universities (100% of the state public college average tuition rate at private colleges and universities on the Approved Schools List).
Marietta College Programs
A student must be enrolled full time in a first bachelor’s degree program to be eligible for Marietta College scholarships and grants. Students seeking an additional bachelor’s degree are not eligible. All scholarships awarded, unless otherwise noted in the scholarship criteria, will be credited to tuition and fees only. No refunds of Marietta College grants or scholarships will be made.
The scholarships listed below are awarded to first-time freshmen only.
The recipient of the McCoy Scholarship will receive an award equal to tuition, fees, standard room, and up to a 14-meal plan at Marietta College for ten academic semesters of continuous academic enrollment. This award supersedes all other college-funded awards. Recipient must live on campus.
Recipients of the Trustees’ Scholarship will receive an award equal to full tuition at Marietta College for ten semesters of continuous enrollment. This award supersedes all other college funded awards. A limited number of scholarships will be awarded each year. This award is competitive and by invitation only. Recipients must live on campus.
Recipients of the 1835 Founders Scholarship will receive an annual award equal of $26,000 at Marietta College. The scholarship is renewable for ten semesters. Recipients must have a high school GPA of 4.0 or higher.
Recipients of the Marietta Distinction Scholarship will receive an annual award of $25,000 at Marietta College. The scholarship is renewable for ten semesters. Recipients must have a high school GPA of 3.65 - 3.99.
Recipients of the Compass Scholarship will receive an annual award of $23,000 at Marietta College. The scholarship is renewable for ten semesters. Recipients must have a high school GPA of 3.30 - 3.64.
Recipients of the Riverside Grant will receive an annual award of $20,000 at Marietta College. The scholarship is renewable for ten semesters. Recipients must have a high school GPA of 2.95 – 3.29.
Recipients of the Pioneer Grant will receive an annual award of $15,000 at Marietta College. The scholarship is renewable for ten semesters. Recipients must have a high school GPA of 2.94 or lower.
To renew their awards, all scholarship recipients are required to maintain continuous full-time enrollment at Marietta, be in good standing in the community and make satisfactory academic progress while studying at Marietta College.
To be considered for these scholarships, a prospective student must be fully admitted by the start of the first term of the freshman year of college.
Students interested in physics can apply separately for consideration as a Rickey Scholar. This scholarship provides awards of full tuition per year and requires students to be physics majors and maintain a 3.25 GPA. This award supersedes all other merit-based college funded awards.
Students qualifying for need-based assistance will receive a Basic Eligibility Notice incorporating the amount of the scholarship.
Talent Scholarships in the Fine Arts are awarded to first-time freshmen on the basis of the student’s performance in a college-sponsored competition and range from $1,00-$5,000. When awarding the scholarships, the faculty uses many criteria including previous fine arts experience and education, letters of reference, an audition, and/or a portfolio. These scholarships include the Art/Graphic Design, Music, and Theatre departments.
In order to compete, students must be admitted to the College and must complete a reservation available through the Office of Admission.
To renew the Talent Scholarship, students must maintain satisfactory progress toward a degree, participate in their area of talent while attending Marietta College, and must be recommended for renewal by the Talent Scholarship Committee. Recipients of Talent Scholarships eligible for need-based assistance will receive a Financial Aid Basic Eligibility Notice incorporating the amount of the scholarship.
The awards listed below are awarded to students who transfer to Marietta College and who meet the specific criteria for each award. Consideration is automatic and requires no additional application.
The Transfer 1835 Founders Scholarship requires a minimum college GPA of a cumulative 3.5 or greater. Students will receive an annual award of $24,000.
The Transfer Marietta Distinction Scholarship requires a minimum college GPA of a cumulative 3.25 - 3.49. Students will receive an annual award of $23,000.
The Transfer Compass Scholarship requires a minimum college GPA of a cumulative 3.0 - 3.24. Students will receive an annual award of $21,000.
The Transfer Riverside Grant requires a minimum college GPA of a cumulative 2.75 – 2.99. Students will receive an annual award of $18,000.
The Transfer Pioneer Grant requires a minimum college GPA of a cumulative 2.74 or lower. Students will receive an annual award of $14,000.
Additional Scholarships & Grants
The grants and scholarships listed below are awarded to both incoming and transfer students and are renewable for up to 10 semesters. To maintain eligibility, students must be in good academic standing and making satisfactory academic progress toward a degree.

The Charles Sumner Harrison Attendance Grant provides an award of $1,000. To be eligible for this award, the student must have attended and competed for the Charles Sumner Harrison Scholarship. Students are not eligible to receive both this grant and the Premier Attendance Grant; only one will be awarded.
The Premier Attendance Grant provides an award of $1,000 annually. To be eligible for this award, the student must have attended and competed on Premier Scholarship Day. Students are not eligible to receive both this grant and the Charles Sumner Harrison Attendance Grant; only one will be awarded.
The Economic Roundtable Sponsor Scholarship provides an award of $2,000 annually. To be eligible for this award, the student must be nominated by a sponsor of the Economic Roundtable of the Ohio Valley and be admissible by the criteria established by the Office of Admission of Marietta College.
The International Grant provides an award of $2,000 to international students as determined by the Admission Office through the application process.
The Legacy Grant is awarded to children and grandchildren of Marietta College graduates. The award is for $1,000. Transfer students are eligible for the Legacy Grant, though previous college work will be counted in determining years of renewal.
The Long Blue Line Scholarship provides an award of $500 annually to students who are nominated for admission by an alum of Marietta College. Students who receive this scholarship as an incoming student and must be nominated by the deadline established by the Admission Office.
The Visit Grant provides an award of $500 annually and is awarded to students who schedule and attend an individual campus visit to Marietta College during the Fall term preceding their acceptance.
Students are only eligible to receive one (1) of the scholarships/grants listed below:
The eSports Scholarship provides an award of $2,000 annually to students who are on the eSports team as determined by a tryout. The scholarship is renewable provided the recipient remains on the eSports team. Students who are on another athletic team for MC will become ineligible for the eSports Scholarship due to NCAA regulations.
The McDonough Leadership Scholarship provides an award of $2,000 annually to students who are accepted to Marietta College and the McDonough Leadership program by January 1st of the year they will matriculate. Students must remain in the Leadership program to maintain eligibility for this scholarship.
The West Virginia Pioneer Grant provides an annual award of $2,500 to students from West Virginia high schools who qualify for the West Virginia Promise Scholarship and who live on campus. Transfer students are not eligible for the West Virginia Pioneer Grant. Students must remain West Virginia residents and continue to live on campus to maintain eligibility for this scholarship.
Marietta College is committed to partnering with students and their families to make a Marietta College education affordable. Marietta College Grants represent our institutional commitment to affordability and consist of college funds awarded on the basis of need to students enrolled full-time at the College. Determination of need is made using information provided to the Office of Student Financial Services through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Funding for these grants considers all institutional gift aid sources.
As a residential campus, Student Financial Services calculates the Marietta College Grant for students as on-campus. If a student is approved to live off-campus, the student becomes ineligible for the Marietta College Grant. Marietta College does not provide additional financial aid for indirect costs.
