Curricular Options & Enhancements

Marietta College offers students many opportunities to enhance their education program beyond the minimum requirements for the degree. This section describes the ways in which value can be added to a student’s educational experience at the College. Students pursuing one or more of these options need to ensure that they understand how these options may affect their graduation requirements, the time for completion, and the impact on financial aid eligibility. This section should be read in conjunction with the sections describing Undergraduate Degrees-Graduation Requirements and Academic Policies and Practices. Students applying for or receiving financial aid should also review Financial Aid and Standards of Satisfactory Academic Progress. 

The academic advisor as well as the Registrar and Director of Financial Aid are available to assist with questions about these policies and how they apply in specific cases.

Program Additions

As described in the Undergraduate Graduation Requirements section, students…with some exemptions… are required to completion a secondary concentration in addition to the major. Criteria for these and any additional “embedded credentials” are outlined below.

Double Major

A student may elect to pursue a second major. For a student to be granted more than one major, both majors must include a minimum of 18 hours of 300- and 400-level semester credit hours that are not included in the other major. A minimum grade point average of 2.000 is required in each major. The major GPA is calculated from all courses applied in satisfaction of the major.

Students who add or change a major must meet all requirements for the new major as described in the most recently published catalog at the time the new major is declared with the Records Office. Except where a course is offered only on a Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (S/U) grade basis, all courses used in satisfaction of a major must be taken for a letter grade.

A student who graduates with two majors, one of which qualifies for one bachelor's degree, e.g. B.A. and the other for a different bachelor's degree, e.g. B.S., will be awarded both degrees and will receive a diploma for each degree awarded.

Minor(s)

  1. Students may elect to complete the requirements for one or more minors. A minor commonly consists of 18 to 24 credit hours, and includes a reasonable distribution of lower and upper division courses. Except where a course is offered only on a Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (S/U) grade basis, all courses used in satisfaction of a minor must be taken for a letter grade. A minimum grade point average of 2.000 is required for all courses offered in satisfaction of the minor. Each minor must include at least 12 hours that do not overlap the chosen major(s) or other minor(s).

Students who add or change a minor must meet all requirements for the new minor as described in the most recently published catalog at the time the new minor is declared with the Records Office. A minimum of six of the credit hours presented for graduation with a minor area must have been earned at Marietta College.

A graduate of Marietta College who desires to complete a second major or minor must notify the registrar of this intention and abide by the requirements of the major/minor and the policies governing majors/ minors set forth in the catalog in force at the time of such notification. Such a student, however, need not meet the general education requirements of the catalog in force.

Specialization(s)

Marietta College offers specializations in several areas of instruction. Like minors, specializations are available only to both degree-seeking students and recognize completion of a specified body of courses united by an academic theme. Although the requirements for a specialization vary, all require a minimum of 13 hours; a minimum of 6 hours that do not overlap the chosen major(s), minor(s), and/or other specialization(s); and a minimum grade point average of 2.000 for courses completed as part of the specialization.

Additional Notes Regarding the Approved Program of Study

The following parameters have been established to support academic advising and on-time completion and to reduce the likelihood of adverse implications for financial aid.

  1. A student may declare a maximum of three minors and/or specializations.
  2. The primary major should be declared no later than the start of the junior year (i.e., the fall or spring semester following completion of 58 total credit hours or, for students matriculating with 30 or more prior credits, following two semesters of enrollment at Marietta College.
  3. The secondary concentration and any additional embedded credentials should be declared no later than the midpoint of the junior year (i.e., the start of the semester following completion of 74 total credit hours).
  4. Only courses taken toward the declared academic degree program, included declared embedded credentials and, if applicable, Curriculum and Research Honors, will be aid eligible.
  5. Students who wish to add or change the declared academic program after the deadlines noted above will be asked to provide a plan of study that includes a rationale for the requested change(s) and clearly outlines the timeline for completion. The study plan will be reviewed by the Director of Financial Aid and the Registrar, in consultation with the faculty advisor, to ensure any impact on the number of terms required to complete and any impact on financial aid eligibility are understood.
