MUSC 123 English, Italian, German Diction
This course introduces the international phonetic alphabet (IPA) and pronunciation in these three languages. By the end of the course, students will be able to read and write IPA, as well as sing. One assignment that will be used in this course are song projects. The student will pick one song in each of the languages above, and will write out the IPA for it, speak the text to the instructor while reading, and perform the piece for the class. Understanding how to pronounce the text will help the singer convey the correct dialect and pronunciations to their own vocal students in the future. While singers may not speak these languages, they are very common in solo vocal repertoire and are used frequently in vocal lessons.
