GEOL 301 Igneous and Metamorphic Petrology
This course will apply hand-sample and microscopic mineral identification skills learned in GEOL 202 to igneous and metamorphic rocks. Along with basic information on classification and nomenclature for igneous and metamorphic rocks, the following topics will also be broached: petrogenesis of various compositions of magmas, ternary phase diagrams, major, minor and trace element geochemistry, volcanic igneous structures and field relationships, metamorphic facies and equilibrium mineral assemblages, and metamorphism of pelitic, ultramafic and carbonate rocks. The three hour lab periods will focus on igneous and metamorphic petrography, and several igneous case studies, with accompanying lab reports, will be conducted.
