The department identifies its role as providing all students with the opportunity to pursue a wide range of elective courses in the area of lifetime sports and wellness.
To this end, courses are offered in the following areas:
Lifetime Activity (100-level PHED):
Lifetime activity courses provide students with opportunities to learn basic rules, terminology, skills, strategies, and techniques in the chosen area of study. Most physical education activity classes meet during the first 10 weeks or last 10 weeks of the semester. Add, drop, withdrawal dates for the 10-week classes are prorated based on the length of the course. Each course offers 1 hour of credit.
Varsity Sports:
Students may apply up to 2 hours of credit toward the minimum hours required for graduation in any combination of varsity sports. Each course offers 1 hour of credit.
Physical Education Theory:
Rules and Officiating of Team Sports (PHED 220-226): These 1 credit courses are offered when warranted by student interest and are available for the following sports: Football, Basketball, Baseball, Soccer, and Volleyball.
Philosophy and Methods of Coaching (PHED 240-249): Theory and methods of coaching, including technical, administrative and organizational aspects of process. Emphasizes fundamentals, tactics, conditioning, conduct of practice sessions, match and tournament organization, and budget planning. Offered when warranted by student interest and are available for the following sports: Football, Basketball, Baseball, Soccer, Crew, Softball, Cross Country, Track, Tennis, and Volleyball. Each course offers 1 hour of credit.
