2024-2025 Catalog and Student Handbook

Commencement

Marietta College has one traditional graduation ceremony held in May each year. The college also holds a more modest yet formal ceremony in December each year.

There are three categories of students eligible to participate in the Spring ceremony:

  1. Students who are scheduled to complete all graduation requirements as of the conclusion of the spring semester.
  2. Students who completed all of the requirements for graduation the previous calendar year and who did not participate in a prior Commencement ceremony for the same degree.
  3. Students who have not completed all requirements, but who are scheduled to complete all degree requirements by the end of the same calendar year.

Please note: It is important that the student notify the Records Office regarding in which ceremony the student wishes to participate as the student's name and degree information will be included in only one Commencement program.

Spring semester grades are due at the Records Office the Tuesday after Commencement. Students will be notified of any change in status by the Registrar and will have an opportunity to review the final degree audit for accuracy.

Fall graduates who choose not to participate in the full spring commencement ceremony are invited to participate in the more intimate fall commencement or to return for the full ceremony the following spring. Students may not participate in both spring and fall ceremonies for the same degree.

Recognition of Honors:

Students in Group 1 will have honors recognized based on the cumulative grade point average as of the end of the previous fall semester. However, formal awarding of honors will be determined based upon the cumulative GPA after all requirements are completed and final grades are submitted. Students who choose to participate in the spring ceremony prior to completion will not be recognized for honors.

Previous graduates who are completing an additional major, minor, or certificate are not eligible to participate in Commencement and will not be recognized in the program.

Diplomas will be withheld from any student whose financial obligations to the College have not been satisfied.
